FocusMe can save plans to .FMP files and load them again on the same or another installation. This is useful for backups, sharing a plan with someone, or moving to a new computer without an account. If you are logged in, Sync to Devices moves plans between your own computers automatically; import and export are for everything else.

Enable Import & Export

The menu items are hidden until you switch them on:
  1. Open SettingsSystem
  2. Enable Enable Import & Export of Plans
  3. Export and Import now appear in the plan context menu
The setting cannot be changed while any plan is enabled — Cannot change this setting while any plan is enabled! Stop your plans first.

Exporting Plans

  1. Right-click a plan in the Plans list and choose Export
  2. In the Export Plans dialog (Select plans to export:), tick the plans you want — you can export several into one file — and click Export Selected
  3. Choose where to save the .FMP file
The file holds the complete configuration of each plan: targets, schedule and rule settings, blocking behaviour and protection.
Because protection settings travel with the plan, treat exported files with some care — anyone who imports one gets the plan exactly as you built it, password and all.

Importing Plans

  1. Right-click a plan (or, if the list is empty, the empty area of the Plans list) and choose Import
  2. Select the .FMP file
  3. In the Import Plans dialog (Select plans to import:), tick the plans you want and click Import Selected
  4. The plans are added to your list, ready for you to review and start
If the file cannot be read you will see Could not open the file. It may be in use or inaccessible.; a damaged or unrecognised file gives No plans could be imported. The file may be corrupt or invalid.
Imported plans keep their names. If you already have a plan with the same name, rename one of them from the plan’s drawer (click the row, then the pencil next to the name) so they are easy to tell apart.

Submit to Library

Rather than passing files around, you can offer a plan to everyone through the Plan Library. You need to be logged in.
  1. Right-click the plan and choose Submit to Library
  2. In the Submit Plan to Library dialog, enter a display name (Choose a display name (shown on your templates):, at least 3 characters) and pick a Category:
  3. Click Submit
Your plan is submitted to the FocusMe community library for others to use. Community templates are imported with softened protection — Enforced challenges and perfect-entry requirements are not carried over — so nobody can be locked into a plan they did not design.

Use Cases

Notes

  • Exported files contain plan configuration only — no activity history, tasks or account data
  • Import and export work whether or not you are logged in; the setting is per computer
  • Predefined website and application lists are separate from plans and have their own Import list from file… / export options in the wizard’s Manage lists… flyout
