# Commitment Settings

> Rules you set in advance for assisted stops: who can approve one, a commitment fee, a wait, a limit, a lock and what happens when a plan is set up wrong.

Commitment settings are the rules FocusMe support follows when you ask for an [assisted stop](/concepts/plan-protection#assisted-stop). You set them in advance, while your head is clear, so a stop in a weak moment costs you something or takes time. They apply to all plans unless a plan has its own.

Open **Settings → Commitment** (shown when you're signed in), or **Commitment settings** in your [account on focusme.com](https://focusme.com/my-account/?tab=commitment_settings).

<Info>**Stricter changes work at once. Easier changes wait 7 days**, and you can cancel them until then. A lock that cannot be shortened can only be extended.</Info>

## Choosing a level

Pick **Gentle**, **Recommended** or **Strict** to fill in a set of rules, or **Custom** for your own mix. Nothing applies until you click **Save**. FocusMe then shows what starts now and what starts in 7 days, and you confirm.

## Who can approve a stop?

* **My partner or FocusMe support**: either can approve a stop. Support follows the rules below.
* **Only my partner**: your [accountability partner](/concepts/accountability-partner) approves by email or gives you a code. FocusMe support will not approve a stop. Needs a confirmed partner.

## What holds you to your plans

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Commitment fee** | An amount you choose, charged when FocusMe support stops a plan for you. **None** turns it off. Tax may be added, depending on where you live. |
| **Wait before a stop lands** | Extra time between approval and the plans stopping, from **No extra wait** up to **90 days**. FocusMe still waits 1 to 2 hours before an assisted stop goes ahead, and longer each time you ask again within a week. When a fee applies, the wait starts once you have paid it. |
| **Most assisted stops** | A limit per month, 3, 6 or 12 months. Paid, free and partner stops all count. Past the limit, a person decides. **0** means a person decides every assisted stop. |
| **No assisted stops until** | A lock: no plan is stopped for you before this date, up to 12 months ahead. Tick **This lock cannot be shortened** to make it final; a lock longer than 90 days always is. |
| **When a stop can land** | The days and hour a stop may take effect, in your time zone. After the wait, the stop lands at the next time you chose. |
| Partner-approved stops | **Charge my commitment fee when my partner approves a stop too** and **My lock also covers partner-approved stops** extend the fee and the lock to your partner's approvals. Turning one on works at once; turning it off takes 7 days. While either is on, a partner you add can approve stops 7 days after confirming. |

## For emergencies and mistakes

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Free stops a month** | 0 to 4 stops for an emergency or a mistake. They count towards your limit. After these, your commitment fee applies. |
| **Urgent stops** | Offers **This is urgent** once a month when you ask for a stop. Your own wait still applies. |
| **Lock-break fee** | Optional. The fee to end your lock early. It starts 7 days after you save it. Tick **Also applies past my limit** to let it cover a stop past your limit too. |
| **If a plan is set up wrong** | What support does when you say a plan blocks something by mistake: **Support fixes the plan, and it keeps running**, or **No exceptions: my usual settings apply**. |

## Rules for one plan

On the Plan Wizard's **How strict** step, the **Assisted stops** row chooses **Use my defaults** or **Custom rules for this plan**. A plan can have its own **Commitment fee**, **Wait**, **No stops until** date and **Lock-break fee**. When one request covers several plans, the strictest rules apply.

## Paying a fee

When a stop needs a fee, the request dialog offers to pay it. The payment page opens on focusme.com. Paying does not skip your wait, and FocusMe shows when your plans will stop. If you don't pay, FocusMe support looks at your request.

You can cancel during the wait and get your fee back. Once your plans have stopped, the fee is not refundable. If a paid request is denied, the payment is refunded. Commitment fees pay for the Assisted Stop service and the FocusMe team who run it.

## When a stop request can't be sent

If your settings rule out a stop (assisted stops switched off, a lock in force, or your limit used up), **Get help with a plan** says *A stop request cannot be sent for this plan* and why. Under **Is something not working?** you can still **Report a fault**, or **Ask for a plan fix** unless you chose **No exceptions: my usual settings apply**, and **Ask my partner** stays available when a partner can approve.

## After an assisted stop

After an assisted stop, FocusMe may ask *Would it help to make the next assisted stop a little harder?* and suggest **Light**, **Steady** or **Firm** rules. Choose one and click **Use this setup**, or **Not now**. A setup only makes your rules stricter, never easier.
